In Northeast Ohio, book Christmas light installation in September or October. Installs usually run from mid-October through November, so the lights are up and tested before Thanksgiving. Spots fill quickly once the weather turns cold.
Installers don't hang lights in December. Most of the work happens in the weeks before Thanksgiving, and the calendar fills up fast. Here's how the season usually goes in Brunswick, Medina and the rest of Northeast Ohio.
The Christmas light season, month by month
- September – early October: book. This is the best time to get on the schedule and pick your install window.
- Mid-October – November: install. The weather is still workable and the roofs are usually dry. Lights go up early and stay off until you're ready.
- Thanksgiving week: lights on. Timers get set so the display comes on automatically each night.
- December: service. If a strand or bulb goes out, it gets fixed.
- January: takedown. Lights come down after the holidays.
Why earlier is better in Ohio
Northeast Ohio weather gets unpredictable quickly. One week in November it's 55 degrees, and the next there's frost on the shingles and wind off the lake. Installers schedule around rain, wind and ice, and every bad-weather day pushes the whole list back. If you book early, you're installed while the weather is still easy to work in.

The lights go up early, but they don't turn on until you want them to. Your house stays dark until the timer starts, usually the day after Thanksgiving.
