To prepare a Medina County lawn for winter, keep mowing until growth stops (usually November), make the final cut slightly shorter, remove heavy leaf cover, avoid leaving piles or toys on the grass, and stake the driveway edges so snow removal doesn't tear up the turf.
Most lawns in Medina County are cool-season grasses: Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue and perennial ryegrass. They do a lot of their root growth in fall, so what you do now shows up in spring.
1. Keep mowing until it stops growing
Don't put the mower away in October just because it's cold. Cool-season grass keeps growing until the soil gets truly cold, often into November in Northeast Ohio.
2. Make the last cut slightly shorter
For the final mow or two, take the height down a little, but don't scalp it. Long, floppy grass under snow tends to mat down and is more prone to snow mold.
3. Don't let leaves sit
A heavy, wet leaf layer blocks light and traps moisture. Mulch light leaf cover with the mower, and remove the heavy stuff.
4. Clear the lawn before the snow
Hoses, furniture, toys and leaf piles left on the grass will leave dead spots by spring.
5. Protect the edges from snow removal
Plows and snowblowers chew up turf along the driveway and walkways. Put in driveway stakes before the ground freezes so whoever clears your snow knows where the pavement ends.
6. Plan spring now
Thin or bare areas are worth noting now, so they can be graded and seeded at the right time.
