Rock salt vs. ice melt: what should you use on your driveway?

Quick answer

Rock salt is cheap and works in moderate cold, but it's harder on concrete, plants and pets. Calcium chloride works in much colder temperatures and acts faster. Magnesium chloride and pet-friendly blends are gentler on surfaces and paws. Avoid deicers on concrete less than about a year old.

Not all ice melt is the same. The right choice depends on how cold it gets, what your driveway is made of, and whether you have pets or plants near the walkways.

The main options

  • Rock salt (sodium chloride): the cheapest and most common. It works well in moderate cold but slows down a lot in deep cold. It's hard on concrete, lawn edges and plants, and it irritates pets' paws.
  • Calcium chloride: works at much lower temperatures and melts quickly. It's a strong choice for the coldest Ohio mornings. Use only what you need.
  • Magnesium chloride: generally gentler on concrete and plants than rock salt. A popular middle ground.
  • Pet-friendly blends: made to be easier on paws. Still wipe your pets' feet after walks.
  • Sand or grit: doesn't melt anything, but adds traction on ice.

Protecting your concrete

Freeze-thaw cycles, plus deicers, are what cause flaking and pitting on driveways. To limit damage:

  • Clear the snow first, so ice melt is a finishing step and not the main tool.
  • Use only as much as you need.
  • Be extra careful with new concrete. Check with your installer before using any deicer in the first winter.
  • Sealed concrete holds up better against salt.

Protecting lawns and plants

Salt that gets shoveled or plowed onto the grass shows up as brown edges in spring. Pile snow away from beds and shrubs where you can, and avoid throwing salty slush onto landscaping.
