The fall yard cleanup checklist for Northeast Ohio

Quick answer

A good Northeast Ohio fall cleanup clears leaves off the lawn and out of beds, cuts back perennials, gives the beds a final weeding and edge, cleans the gutters once most leaves have fallen, does the last mow a little shorter, and marks the driveway before snow. Most of it is best done from late October through November.

A good fall cleanup makes spring a lot easier. Leaves left on the lawn smother the grass, overgrown beds give weeds a head start, and clogged gutters cause trouble in the first freeze. Here's the checklist we work through on properties around Brunswick and Medina.

Lawn

  • Get the leaves off. A thick, wet layer of leaves blocks sunlight and can leave dead, matted patches by spring. A light layer can be mulched into the lawn with the mower.
  • Keep mowing until the grass stops growing. Cool-season grasses like bluegrass and fescue keep growing well into fall.
  • Lower the last mow slightly. A slightly shorter final cut (but not scalped) helps prevent matting under snow.

Beds and landscaping

  • Pull the last weeds before they go to seed.
  • Cut back spent perennials such as hostas and daylilies. Leave ornamental grasses and seed heads if you like winter interest.
  • Clear leaves out of beds and away from the foundation.
  • Re-cut bed edges so they're crisp in spring.
  • Top off thin spots with mulch to insulate roots.

Gutters and downspouts

Clean the gutters after most of the leaves have dropped, usually mid-to-late November in Northeast Ohio. Then check that the downspouts drain away from the house. Clogged gutters in December are how ice dams and basement leaks start. More on gutter timing.

Hardscapes and the exterior

  • Blow off the patio, walkways and driveway.
  • Pressure wash the deck or patio before winter if it's green or slick.
  • Shut off and drain outdoor faucets and hoses.

Get ready for snow

  • Put driveway stakes in before the ground freezes.
  • Mark anything a plow or snowblower could hit: landscape lights, edging, curbs.
  • Line up snow removal before the first storm. Here's our snow prep checklist.

FAQ

When should I do a fall cleanup in Ohio?

Late October through November, once most of the leaves are down. Some properties need two visits: one mid-fall and one after the last leaves drop.

Is it bad to leave leaves on the lawn over winter?

A thick layer is. It smothers the grass and can cause dead patches and snow mold. A light layer chopped up by the mower is fine.
