In Northeast Ohio, clean gutters at least twice a year: in late spring after the seeds and blossoms drop, and in late fall (usually mid-to-late November) after most leaves have fallen. Homes under big oaks or maples may need a third cleaning.
Gutters are easy to forget until water comes over the edge in a storm. In Northeast Ohio, timing matters, because clogged gutters going into winter cause more damage than at any other time of year.
The two cleanings that matter most
- Late spring (May–June): after maple seeds ("helicopters"), pollen and blossoms come down.
- Late fall (mid-to-late November): after most leaves are down. If you clean too early, you'll have full gutters again by December.
Lots of trees overhanging the roof? Add a mid-fall cleaning.
Why fall gutter cleaning matters in Ohio
When gutters are packed with wet leaves going into a freeze, water can't drain. It backs up, freezes, and helps form ice dams along the roof edge. Melting snow then gets pushed under the shingles. Overflow also dumps water right next to your foundation, which is how a lot of basement leaks start.
Signs your gutters need cleaning
- Water spilling over the edge during rain
- Plants or seedlings growing out of the gutter
- Sagging sections or gutters pulling away from the fascia
- Stains or streaks on the siding below the gutter
- Downspouts that barely trickle in heavy rain
Don't forget the downspouts
A clean gutter with a clogged downspout still overflows. Downspouts should be flushed, and they should drain several feet away from the house.
Skip the ladder
Two-story gutters are one of the riskiest jobs homeowners take on. We clean them by hand, flush the downspouts and bag everything up. See gutter cleaning, or text a photo of your house to 440-532-3857 for a quick quote.
FAQ
How often should gutters be cleaned in Ohio?
At least twice a year, in late spring and late fall. More often if large trees hang over your roof.
Do gutter guards mean I never have to clean?
No. Guards cut down on debris, but seeds, shingle grit and small leaves still build up and need periodic cleaning.
